Frances Macve Contemporary Fine Artist working in oils based in the hills not far from Lodéve, in the Hérault valley, near Montpellier.

As an oil painter in the South of France my work covers a wide range of subjects from landscapes, (French landscape, and English landscapes) still life, (nature morte) abstract, figurative, and nudes, the paintings below are a selection of those all held in private collections worldwide. The majority of the oil paintings you see on this site are painted either entirely or using elements of, the Van Eyck technique or ‘technique mixte’ (graciously taught to me by Patrick Betaudier at the Medici Gallery, Montflanquin, Lot-et-Garonne) whereby the painting begins life as a charcoal pencil or fusain drawing. The ‘lights’ and ‘darks’ are then added using umbers and white and then finally colour is added using a glazing system of layers, mixing the oil paints both on and off the canvas, so catching the light within. On occasion I may paint ‘alla prima’ that is to say without a sketch, but this remains the exception.
