Since Turkey is part of the EU customs union, it is subject to zero EU customs duties. This puts India at a disadvantage. Since the U.S. is now taking protectionist measures and threatening to raise tariffs, countries like the Republic of Korea and Mexico, which have trade agreements with the U.S., have an advantage, because if the U.S. takes protectionist measures, those countries can demand compensation from the U.S. under the rules of their respective trade agreements. India does not have free trade agreements (SAAs) with its major apparel import markets such as the EU, the US and the UAE. While India remains one of the top exporters, India`s apparel exports have stagnated in recent years.
